U.S. Embassy to Host Discussion on Women’s Rights
September 8th, 2006: The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy will host a discussion on women’s rights on September 14th 2006. The discussion, titled “Women’s Rights in the U.S.– Lessons for Zimbabwe,” comes at a time when Zimbabwe’s legislature is considering a law to contain domestic violence, a move that is in line with the country’s ratification of the UN’s Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
The discussion will follow a presentation by Sylvia Chirawu, National Coordinator for Zimbabwe at Women & Law in Southern Africa (WILSA) and an alumnus of the prestigious Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Program. As a 2005 Hubert Humphrey fellow, Chirawu studied at the American University in Washington D.C. and worked with the American Bar Association Commission on Domestic Violence.
The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program brings accomplished professionals from designated countries of Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Europe and Eurasia to the United States at a midpoint in their careers for a year of study and related professional experiences. The Program provides a basis for establishing long-lasting productive partnerships and relationships between citizens of the United States and their professional counterparts in other countries, fostering an exchange of knowledge and mutual understanding throughout the world.
