AMBASSADOR DELL TO HONOR SIX CHARITY ORGANIZATIONS

(18/3/2005)

United States Ambassador to Zimbabwe Christopher Dell will disburse more than Z$37 million in support of underprivileged children at six charity organizations in Zimbabwe at a ceremony to be held at Number 3 Tina Close, Chisipite, Harare on Friday, March 18, 2005 at 1100 hours.

Recipients of the money, raised recently during an Art for Hope Exhibition Fundraiser held the Harare International School, are Ukuthuthuka Crèche, Kwari Youth Aids Orphanage, Mushata Mbudzi Preschool, MHT Club Children’s Care, Chiedza Child Care Centre and Queens Elizabeth Children’s Home.

The cash awards will go a long way in funding the installation of a roof and door at Mushata Mbudzi Preschool, borehole construction at Ukuthuthuka Crèche, purchase of winter jerseys and school supplies for the children at Queen Elizabeth Children’s Home, Chiedza Child Care Center and Kwari Youth Aids Orphanage.

Last year 30 artists, including David Chinyama, Waison Mupedza, Percy Manyonga, Phanuel Soza, Virginia Chihota, Boarding Dzinotizei and many more, submitted over 300 paintings representing all of Zimbabwe in the richness of color through various mediums such as acrylic, pastels, charcoal and oils.  All artists donated 40 percent of all proceeds from paintings sold.

Art for Hope was inspired by a local artist, David Chinyama, who offered to use his work to raise funds for an orphanage in his village, stating, “the children are our hope, they are our future and we must help them not to be in despair.”

The inaugural Art for Hope undertaking held in 2003 netted over Z$14 million that went to charity.
