U. S. Fulbright Scholars  To Conduct HIV/AIDS Workshops

(29/4/2004)

Two Fulbright Scholars and HIV/AIDS experts from the United States - Dr. Lisa Lopez Levers from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Dr. Marie Scott Brown from Oregon Health and Science University, Portland, Oregon - will conduct workshops in Harare and Bulawayo on “The Impact of HIV/AIDS on Child Development: Culturally Relevant Counseling for Children.”  The first workshop will be held in Harare on May 3 and 4 in the United States Embassy Public Affairs Auditorium at Century House East, Corner Nelson Mandela Avenue at Angwa Street.  A repeat workshop will be held at the Rainbow Sun Hotel in Bulawayo on May 6 and 7.

More than 25 participants drawn from HIV/AIDS non-governmental organizations working with orphans and other vulnerable children will attend the workshops being sponsored by the U. S. Embassy Public Affairs Section in Harare and Bulawayo under the Fulbright Regional Share Program.  The workshops will cover issues centering on the impact of HIV/AIDS on children, child development from an ecological perspective, and helping children to deal with trauma, loss, and bereavement, including designing, and developing culturally sensitive community-based services for orphans and other vulnerable children.

The Fulbright Scholars are currently based in Botswana where they are carrying out separate HIV/AIDS research projects.  Dr. Brown was awarded a research grant to conduct research entitled “Evaluation of University Botswana Interventions in HIV/AIDS on Campus.”  With funds from the 2004 Fulbright Research grant, Dr. Levers is conducting a research in Botswana on “Sustainable HIV/AIDS Abatement Endeavors in Southern Africa: Considering Contextual Factors and Designing Culturally Relevant and Gender Sensitive Counseling and Educational Activities.”

The Fulbright Program has been in existence in Zimbabwe since 1982 and approximately 150 Zimbabweans and Americans have participated in the program.
