Call for Applications

The U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section is now accepting applications for the 2014 Fulbright Junior Staff Development Program.  This program will award scholarships to Zimbabwean University faculty for advanced degree in the United States.   The Fulbright Junior Staff Development Program is the largest Fulbright program with Africa and is designed primarily to strengthen African universities through higher degree training.   

The Fulbright program is the principal international educational program sponsored by the United States government. The primary source of funding for the Fulbright program is an annual appropriation by the United States Congress.   

Eligibility Requirements

Successful applicants for the Fulbright Junior Staff Development Program should:

  • Be a Zimbabwean citizens
  • Be affiliated with, and committed work at an educational institution in Zimbabweupon
  • completion of the designated program.
  • Have completed prior academic study equivalent to at least a 4 year U.S. bachelor's degree,
  • Be fluent in English,
  • Have outstanding academic records, references and preparation in their chosen field,
  • Have satisfactory required test scores (TOEFL, GRE, GMAT, etc.) N.B. Test fees are paid for the finalists by the Fulbright program.
  • Have high motivation and a serious commitment to completing the program within a  specific time-frame and returning home immediately after the approved program.

Application/Selection Process

Interested applicants must send an application letter, certified copies of all degree transcripts, and a statement of purpose no more than 2 pages in length.  The statement should indicate degree desired (including major field and specialization), candidate’s research interests, and long term career goals.  Applicants must also discuss how they intend to contribute to their home university and to Zimbabwe after obtaining their desired degree. After national selection, final nominations will be reviewed in the United States by independent review committees. These review committees make recommendations to the J.William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. The Institute of International Education (IIE) will seek university placement of successful candidates.

Awards and university placement will be announced in March/April  for programs beginning beginning in August/September 2014. Application deadline is April 30, 2013.  
 
Grant Provisions

The Fulbright Junior Staff Development Program provides: 

  • Round-trip economy international travel and excess-baggage allowance. 
  • An allowance for settling in.
  • A pre-academic orientation program.
  • A monthly maintenance allowance and funding for books and professional activities.
  • Tuition and university fees.
  • Limited accident and sickness insurance.
  • Program required field trips.
  • Academic training.
