Position Title:       Part-Time Information Technology Support Assistant, FSN-8

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Part-Time Information Technology Support Assistant at USAID.  This position will be in the Executive Office Division /Systems Office and will report to the Computer Management Specialist.

 

Scope of work

 

PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE:  3 Months

 

BASIC FUNCTION OF THE POSITION:

The Information Technology Support Assistant will provide information and communication Technology (ICT) support services to the organization.  The ICT equipment and systems located in Harare include a fiber and Ethernet-based LAN, satellite communications, Microsoft Operating System and Applications Server racks Supporting approximately 100 workstations.  IT Support Assistant will be responsible for the day-to-day operations, installation, modification and maintenance of the agency’s LAN and for providing IT support to all users.

 

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

LAN Operations, Installation, Modification and Maintenance

The incumbent performs or assists with installation of hardware, cabling, operating systems and software.  This includes configuration and testing of hardware whose components include uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), monitors, laptops, desktops, digital senders, printers and handheld devices. S/he installs and maintains server-based and PC-based software under the guidance of the IS Manager and also ensures that computers and their peripherals are operated in accordance with agency security policies, standards and guidelines. 

 

S/he troubleshoots all hardware and software and some applications and ensures that they are resolved, sometimes while working together with other customer support offices or external contractors.  This includes performance monitoring of the Internet connection, as well as all LAN-based equipment then reporting findings to the IS Manager for action. 

 

User Support and Assistance

The incumbent will manage the IT Help Desk.  S/he reviews user requests for assistance.  Elevates assistance requests to supervisor or outside technical contractor to resolve when problem is beyond their level of technical expertise.  May offer one-on-one training to users needing specific help with Office Applications and other computer utilities.

 

Administrative Tasks

The incumbent will ensure daily backup for both the network setup and telephone systems are done.  Reviews backup and event logs daily and take appropriate action. Ensures backup media is labeled and stored as prescribed.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education:  Completion of Secondary School up to Cambridge Advanced Level is required.  Additional technical training in Information Technology or related fields is highly desirable as well as certification in these areas.

Experience:  A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in clerical and IT operations work is required, at least one year of which should have been spent operating and providing support for information systems.  Previous experience in using information systems in a United States Government or similar agency is preferable.

Knowledge:  A basic knowledge of organizational IT management principles. Good working knowledge of hardware capabilities and operating procedures and/or computer programs of systems processed to enable differentiation of normal processing problems from machine problems requiring personal attention.  Familiarity with ADP policies, procedures and standard business practices.  Desirable to be able to develop computer applications using a programming language.  Knowledge of Windows 2003 and Office XP is essential.

Skills and Abilities:  Level I typing (less than 40 WPM) enabling PC operation.  Ability to collaborate with others involved in IT operations.  Ability to perform hardware setups, adjustments, and minor maintenance.  Ability to install and work with PCs and servers and their related software packages.  Ability to learn and explain IT concepts to staff that are outside the IT field.

 

Selection Process:  After an initial application screening, the best qualified applicants will be invited to a testing process, which will include an oral interview and a written exercise.  The final phase of the selection process is the probationary period of one year.  Medical and security clearances are also required before employment can begin.  Only short listed candidates will be contacted regarding the final outcome of the selection of this position.
