Celebrating Community Leadership and Action on AIDS

The Auxillia Chimusoro HIV and AIDS Awards is supported by USAID. It aims to honor and celebrate outstanding community leadership and action that has helped curtail the spread and impact of HIV/AIDS.
The Partnership Project wishes to recognize the individuals, organizations and media who take an active role in mitigating the epidemic.
The awards ceremony will be held on, Thursday, 29 November 2007 in Harare.
We encourage everyone to nominate an individual or group for one of the following Awards.
A. MEDIA, ARTS AND CULTURE AWARD
The award recognizes media coverage of the epidemic and utilization of public service announcements for ongoing support of community prevention efforts. This category also recognizes the creative use of the arts and cultural artifacts and symbols and artistic performance that promote awareness and spread information on HIV-AIDS in creative ways.
Nominations must truly be investigative, well researched media articles and creative use of the arts. The material submitted must present fresh information on HIV and AIDS reflect diversity of focus, originality grasp of issues and communicate on stigmatizing or sensational HIV and AIDS messages. The nominations should explain why the individual or media entity deserves this award. Entries are limited to two (2) stories or reports per nomination. We welcome newspaper clippings, tear sheets, and audio of Public Service Announcements, video clips and similar samples.
Entries must have been published or broadcast between October 1,
2006 and September 30, 2007. Broadcast entries must be submitted on CDs, VHS tapes, audio cassettes. Entries with poor audio quality will automatically be disqualified.
B. COMMUNITY AWARD
1. Breakers of Silence Award: Nominate an organization or individuals (especially living with HIV and AIDS) whose actions, interventions or pronouncements have significantly contributed to the breaking of the silence around HIV and AIDS in their communities or the nation. They may be female or male, NGO, association or community groups who have demonstrated courage, conviction and innovation in increasing the depth and quality of public discourse, policy intervention or programmatic action on the epidemic.
2. Advocacy: Recognizes an individual or group who has implemented a great idea, big or small, to make their community aware of the epidemic and has caused a shift in a community's thinking or actions. Describe the activity, number of people it served, how it impacted the community, and why it deserves recognition.
C. LEADERSHIP AWARDS
The Awards will be given to communities or individuals for outstanding leadership in responding to HIV and AIDS. The selected initiatives will demonstrate:
1. Community Empowerment— Empowerment of all groups within communities including marginalized and vulnerable groups to take action to address HIV and AIDS.
2. Gender Equality— Equal involvement of women and males in designing and implementing responses to the epidemic as well as ability to address gender inequalities fueling the spread of HIV and AIDS.
3. GIEPA— Greater involvement and empowerment of people living with HIV and AIDS in the community's response to the epidemic.
4. Orphans and Vulnerable children (OVC) and Youth- The award will be given to groups or individuals who are fighting in the forefront the plight of children and youth in the face of HIV and AIDS and have demonstrated outstanding leadership in improving the needs of OVC.
D. CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY AWARD
The award honors an institution or organization that has designed and implemented creative and most effective and sustainable work based response to HIV and AIDS. Special emphasis will be placed on organisations that present a sustained and innovative ongoing program throughout the year.
E. SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD
This award will be given only to a deserving individual or institution whose actions have made a remarkable impact on the tide of the epidemic in Zimbabwe. Selection of the qualifying awardee will be subjected to rigorous assessment to measure impact, relevance, integrity and quality.
