2009 Warden Message, Number 1
Embassy of the United States of America
Harare, Zimbabwe
March 6, 2009
This warden message is to alert American citizens of the potential for increased political unrest and demonstrations as a result of a traffic accident involving Zimbabwe's Prime Minister, Morgan Tsvangirai. The Prime Minister's wife, Susan, died at the scene of the accident and Prime Minister Tsvangirai has been hospitalized.
We remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations.
American citizens should monitor media coverage of local events and be aware of their surroundings at all times.
The Embassy is monitoring the situation closely and will issue further announcements via warden message if necessary. Warden messages are available online at http://harare.usembassy.gov/warden.html.
We strongly recommend that American citizens register their presence in Zimbabwe via the Internet at https://travelregistration.state.gov or in person at the U.S. Embassy in Harare, located at 172 Herbert Chitepo Avenue (Tel. 263-4-250-593/4/5, email consularharare@state.gov). In the event of an after-hours emergency, please call the above number and ask to be transferred to the duty officer.
